Graham Greene

Who was a drunk in college who attempted suicide several times just to pass the time? Graham Greene, a 20th century writer, is considered to be one of the most important Roman Catholic writers of espionage and other fiction. In the following paragraphs I will discuss Greene's background, achievements, points from his critics, and other jobs that he held.

Graham Greene was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire,

England on October 2, 1904. He attended Berkhamsted School where his father was head master. At Oxford's Balliol College there were good times and bad times for Greene. On the good side he published a volume of poems called "Babbling April." On the bad side he attempted suicide several times and got drunk every day of entire semester just to pass the time. He turned his life around in 1926 by


converting over to Catholicism to prepare for his marriage in 1927 to Vivien Dayrell Browning.

For every author there are always critics. Graham Greene, though not looked down upon that often, did have his highs and lows. There are only two novels that were said to have failed. They were The Name of Action and Rumor at Nightfall. It was said that they lacked life and truth. He never made the mistake of doing this again.
