Holocaust and Rwanda Genocid
Both Jewish people and Rwandan Tutsi minority suffered heart-breaking losses in their population and culture during the twentieth century. But these genocides came as a result of events that occurred earlier in history. As I compare these two I will try to explain why and how they occurred and what are some of the bridges that connect these Genocides.Genocides that occurred during the twentieth century, still fresh in mind of history left the biggest mark so far in the heart of humans. Both Rwanda's and Jewish people suffered great lost in their populations as well as in their culture. When something like this occurs, we have to investigate history of these events and in majority of times we will find there the reason for the madness. Tutsi, although great minority of Rwanda's population, ruled the country through the history. Even during the period of colonization, when they agreed to rule together with French and Belgians. Hutu never forgot that. Hitler's Germany was treated like it didn't exist after WWI, great German pride was hurt because of treatment they received. Hitler knew how to use this anger and Jewish were set to pay the price. And although th
Germany, even in the 1940s, was one of the world's leading powers, fighting a war for global domination. It was a highly developed industrialized nation with a large and sophisticated army. Rwanda, in contrast, is one of the world's least powerful and poorest nations. The majority of its population is rural peasants and the country has long since relied on foreign aid for its survival. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ By drawing parallels between the planned extermination of six million Jews and the ferocious massacre of around half a million Tutsis and Hutus in the course of a violent civil war, we reduce the Holocaust to just another violent event of our century. And Holocaust isn't that. Holocaust is the single most tragic event in the history of the world and that's how it should be remembered and it should never be compared to anything else. What took place in Rwanda was large-scale massacre of civilians in the course of a bloody civil war. Sadly, it bears comparison to a number of other wars in that continent. It was not another holocaust, and it does not advance the cause of preventing further holocausts to pretend that it was. The picture of Rwanda prior to the massacres can't compare with Nazi Germany as the Second World War loomed. Here was a government losing its power and becoming more and more isolated in the world. The Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) was advancing through the country, with the support of a number African and Western states. The economy was falling apart. The Rwandan government was under sustained pressure from the international community to move towards sharing power w
