The Greeks became the first civilized people in a place where frankly early civilization just shouldn't have taken place. The Mycenaeans arrived to modern Greece around 200 B.C. There they found a dry, hot, and harsh mountainous terrain muck like the conditions found today in Arizona. By 700 B.C., despite the harsh environment they were literate and civilized, years before any other culture. They knew that given their surroundings what they accomplished was a great feat and this made them very proud. This pride shows up in every aspect of Greek life.

The Greek sense of pride and determination can easily be seen in their forms of government. Athens is the Greek country most famous for it's governmental systems. In 550 B.C. Athens saw a new form of government called tyranny. The Greeks admired and respected the tyrant for modeled the Greek mind. He saw what he wanted and he did what was necessary to make it his. Greek literature and art has had the most lasting impact of all the great Greek achievements. Their sculptures, architecture, and plays are still studied and marveled today. In the world of art the Greeks took us from block figures with no detail to Aphrodite the first nude sculpture with remarkable detail. Greek literature gives us the biggest glimpse of Greek life. Tragedies such as Oedipus, and Medea gave many overriding themes that Greeks lived by. Some of these themes were: Nice people finish last and die, Women are over emotional and irrational and should be kept quiet, and the best way to get ahead is to kill those who are in your way. The epic poems and lytic poems gave us accounts of Greek history. Homer's Iliad brought us into the literate times. Herodotus and Thucydides gave us accounts of the wars Pindar, the Olympic games and the lone woman poet Sappho, an insight into homosexuality that was prevalent throughout Greek society. The Greeks were so advanced in science, medicine and, philosophy that will still today use many of their achievements. Because of Hippocrates work medicine, as we know it today was formed. Mathematics is also an area where the Greeks still have influence today mainly from Euclid. His research and discoveries in geometry are seen every day in modern society.
