In the movie Casablanca the main character Rick as well as his bar Ricks Place represent what it was to be an American in the 1940's. The country was undergoing a drastic change at this time period, and there was a great deal of ignorance as to what the future held due to the fact of a war. Rick and his bar symbolized this.

Rick symbolizes Americans because of his willing to help the under dog. This is shown in the scene where Rick helps a young couple at his Casino to get the money to pay for trans
