Socrates (philosophy)
Socrates was a great philosopher who had an incredible impact on philosophers of his time and even philosophers today. He lived in Athens from 469 B.C.E to 399 B.C.E during the Periclean Age. He taught his philosophy of life on the streets to anyone who cared to listen. His philosophy basically was that everyone is responsible for his or her own moral attitudes. He was a critic of democracy. He asked simple questions that had difficult answers to people who were considered wise at the time. His teachings were based on discovering the truth, understanding life, and talking about the elements that make up a good life. Socrates was brought to trial with many charges for his teachings and philosophy. Who would know that Socrates trial would have such an impact on philosophy today? Socrates had various charges against him. His court hearing in the story is called The Apology. The main charges brought against Socrates were corrupting the young and not believing in the Gods in whom the city believes in. Socrates felt the charges against him were absurd. His responses to the charges were very complicated, he states to
he jury for his self-defense in his belief in gods, is that he believes in Gods, but he doesn't believe in Gods. Socrates contradicts himself in what he is saying. I think he believes in spiritual things, but not gods. I feel he was just saying this to confuse the court. I don't agree with Socrates statement because he doesn't make sense by contradicting himself, I feel it was very foolish for Socrates to use this approach in his hearing. Socrates cleverness helps him out a little in the hearing, but his arrogance doesn't help him out at all. Socrates just isn't willing to compromise with the jury. Plato. Finally, Socrates is given his poison to drink and he dies a slow tragic death. Socrates was brought to court for his teachings and beliefs. I believe that Socrates was entirely guiltless of the charges that were brought against him. All Socrates was doing was expressing his beliefs by teaching people about morals, goals to a good life, and discovering the truth. I feel if Socrates forced his beliefs upon the people and told them there was no other way to live, he should have been charged. Socrates was very open minded to the world, he looked at it in all aspects. Who is to say what he believed in was true? Obviously he and his trial had an impact on society if this story still lives to this day. I personally feel Socrates w as a great man of his time and he should have not been executed for his philosophy. the jury, "does the man exist who would rather be harmed then benefited by his associates?"(29). Socrates is asking why would he voluntarily hurt
