Before the invention of television and video games, children's only form of entertainment was to play games outside with other neighborhood children. Today that is not the case. Many children return home after school and do not loose sight of the television until the go to sleep. The parents of these children do not believe that sports have major benefits and should not be apart of their children's lives.

Over the past decades there has been major change in our society that have caused the organization of children's sports. Before this time free play and sandlot sports dominated the leisure time of American children. Among these changes is a limited amount of recreational facilities, the progressive loss of open space, and vacant lots in cities and suburbs. There is a significant smaller amount of open fields for children to play in today due to the building of new suburbs. Also, today people are less friendly and less likely to interact with each other. Therefore their children are less likely to meet and play games outside with each other. These changes have made organized sports an attractive option for parents that cannot always keep a close eye on their kids.

The parent's of these children know that organized


but also show why good fitness is important. Knowing how to exercise right at a young age can help them significantly later in their sports career.

In order for children to improve not only in sports but in life itself they need people to look up to and model themselves after. Children need role models. Sports and athletics can provide positive role models for kids. Parents must be careful in which role model that their child decides to choose. Some may lead them in a very wrong direction. Parents play a vital role in child's sports programs. Besides helping their child choose the right role model, parents must accomplish other tasks in order for their children to receive the full benefits of sports. Parents organize car pools; keeps score and time, find sponsors organize schedules, and help with fundraising. Sports also give parents a great way to spend time with their children. The time and pressure of the modern day can be hard, but spending an hour at a kids practice or game is a good way to bond.

To add to the physical benefits of sports, there are numerous mental benefits. Children learn that the reason to play sports is not to win at all costs but to try there hardest to win fairly. Sports can teach children to compete fairly, to try their hardest, to congratulate the winner if they lose, and to except victory gracefully if th
