A detailed Summary of Change

Within every group, culture, or society a constant change is occurring. Every individual is evolving into something different, and because of this alteration within every individual the entire group undergoes a change. Each part of the overall unit pushes and pulls on the other independent parts; everyone and everything is intertwined. The author William Faulkner through his short story," A Rose For Emily, " addresses this issue. He uses his characters to address the dynamics of change within a certain society and more specifically the Deep South in the early 1900's. The author focuses his attention on three main characters, Miss Emily, the Negro manservant and the town.

Faulkner's, " A Rose For Emily," is about the story of a town struggling to move forward. At first glance the reader would see on e main character, Miss Emily's the anchor to the past, and the one who inhibits the town from change. But is she really the one holding them back? Many times she is set in her ways and refuses to budge on certain matters and at these times she is the one holding them back. Another instance in which Emily refused to conform with the towns people was when the town got free postal service. The author writes, " Miss Emily alone refused to let them fasten the metal numbers above her door and attach a mailbox to it. She would not listen to them"(6). These two separate occurrences have a deeper meaniung than merely Miss Dmily refusing to abide to new laws. Instead it is a struggle between the two forces, one who wanted to move on and the other who wanted to dwell in the past.
