When sports fans think of Mark McGwire they think of a man who hit the most home runs in a single season. The name, Mark McGuire, is synonomous with power and strength. Hitting seventy home runs is not an act of God, but one of extrodinary physical prowess. It takes energy to be able to knock run after run some 400 yards out of the park. In sports, today more than ever, athletes like Mark McGuire are turning to the aid of a natural training supplement called creatine. While the use of supplements to enhance performance is nothing new to athletes, never before has one been so effective. "Creatine was discovered in 1832, by a French scientist, Michel Eugene Chevreul, who extracted from meat a new organic constitute and named it creatine" (Branch, Kreider, Williams 6). Creatine is a natural supplement found in the body and some foods like fish and meat. A male weighing about 160 pounds has approximately 120 grams of creatine in the body. So if we already have it stored in our bodies why do we crave more? Why is creatine such an effective training supplement? Before these questions can be answered, we must first

Kreider et al reported that 28 days of creatine supplementation (15.75 grams per day) resulted in a 1.1 kg greater fat free mass in college football players undergoing off-season resistance/agility training (236). my earlier claim, the long-term effects right now are simply unknown. Long term research has not yet been done. Also, andro is only available in the form of a pill making it less accessible for numerous people to use. "In one study groups of athletes put on five to seven pounds of lean muscle in a month" (Klein). That is a substantial change in body mass! "Creatine benefits athletes by enabling a higher training load, . . . and reducing fatigue" (Branch, Kreider, Williams 38). In addition to boosting energy, it is commonly available everywhere and "in a variety of forms including power, gel, tablets, liquid, chewing gum, and candy" (Branch, Kreider, Williams 43). This makes it easier for more people to use. Creatine is also fairly inexpensive. In an interview with Jon and Drew Skaggs, both college baseball players who have used creatine, a month's supply of creatine in the powder form is between $25 and $30. How might creatine be ineffective? What are the effects on h
