The years of 1750 and 1900's have shaped our world

The time in between the years of 1750 and 1900 has shaped the world as we know it, and subsequently the schools as well. The increase of scientific knowledge and technological discovery had a vast effect on society. Through science and technology more efficient ways of growing and creating food were devised, therefore solving the problem of scarcity of goods. The cottage industry was killed off also. This happened because there were more efficient ways to do things than one family producing everything for itself. Goods could now be mass produced, and it was now viable to get things that were needed at the market. Technology also gave rise to transportation, which allowed people to meet each other. Cars, trains, and other transportation allowed people to move into cities, which started centralization. Nutrition and sanitation allowed people to live longer, healthier lives, because diseases that were deadly before this time were cured or avoided. The increase in scienti!

fic discovery also changed how people viewed the world. Religious beliefs were changed due to scientific discovery, and science was now used as the chief method of explaining things.

In addition to scientific discovery increasing, new political systems


Garbarino's article points out things that are forgotten to often by society. The fact that children are used for monetary gain and are exposed to adult sexuality is a tragedy. Also, children should not have to live life around the threat of violence. Although help from the government would be acceptable in the matter, the majority of the responsibility should fall on the shoulders of the parents. Although it is not the child's fault, and they still deserve the right to be protected, parents should not have children if they do not have enough money and enough know-how to raise him.

A phenomena that was starting to become prevalent that had never existed before, and drastically effects life is that of free time. Due to the rise in free time people began to experiment with drugs and spend time in parlors drinking, reading poetry, and philosophizing about society. This was also the first time that there was an existence of a middle class of people that could master a trade to make a living. Previously, a person was either a member of royalty or was a peasant. This time period also was the beginning of a movement towards ethnic cooperation. For the first time minorities and women were given the chance to be educated.

It is important to be concerned wit and analyze than every day rigors of school life. The parents should not be just interested in more than just minor happenings at school and should teach the child to do the same. It is interesting that Jackson mentioned how long the child spends in school, and that he might see more of his teachers than his parents.
