American History X

After Derek is raped in jail, his high school teacher comes over to talk to him about his younger brother, Daniel. The teacher, who is black, tells Derek that he sees "him" in Daniel, that Daniel tries to be like his older brother. Derek says that Daniel isn't his responsibility. He's all nervous about what happened to him and what is happening to his brother. He doesn't know what to do. The teacher gives him a hint. He says: "Have you ever asked yourself: "Has anything I've done made my life better?"" This is the key question which restructures the way Derek has always thought.

"American History X" is the name of the movie I'm talking about. It was made by the "New Line Cinema" studio, A Time Warner Company, and directed by Tony Kaye. Because of the violence and sex scenes in the movie it was rated "R". The main actors were Edward Norton and Edward Furlong who played Derek and Daniel Vinyards, two American brothers. Derek was a leader of a racial gang organization and was sentenced to three years of jail for killing two black men who tried to mess with his father's car. After working with a black man in pr

One of the big moments in the picture was the battle of whites against blacks on the basketball field. Derek was the one who proposed a solution to a problem and who solved it. Black guys had to leave the field even though it was against their wishes. This incident was the starting point of the whole story. Blacks wanted revenge, so two of them went to Derek's house. However, not with accordance with their expectations they got killed.

ison who eventually became his "brother", Derek's attitudes towards minorities were changed. He became a completely different person when he got out.

Racism is the plot of the movie as I understood it. Somewhere in the picture Daniel says that everything begins with the murder of his father, who was a cop and was shot while on duty. He was killed in some black neighborhood and as Derek says by some "nigga drug dealer". However, later in the movie Daniel says that it all began even before their father was dead. Following this reply we see a cut, showing their whole family sitting at a table having lunch. Derek has a book next to him about some black guy and his father starts
