>From the moment they are born, children possess an innate loyalty to their parents. When children are young, their whole world revolves around their family and loyalty to this familial unit, especially the parents, is unwavering. Take for instance children who have been emotionally abused by their parents. No matter what their parents say to them, the children will remain loyal, standing by them through any endeavor and doing almost anything for them. There are times, though, when this loyalty is tested, and in some instances, personal integrity triumphs. Children reach a point where they know the difference between right and wrong and will stand up for what they feel is right, even if that means breaking an


unspoken bond between parent and child.

Loyalty is a strong bond between two people, especially between a child and his/her parent. Integrity surpasses loyalty, though, when the actions of a person are so wrong that it isn't moral to be loyal to that person any longer. Sarty stood by his father for a very long time, but the time came when he had to be true to himself and not do the wrong thing for the sake of being loyal to his father.

/new paragraph/ Despite the strong loyalty displayed by Sarty, there is a part of him that wants to believe his father has stopped his immoral activities. He thinks that maybe his father has been satisfied, but deep down he knows this is not true. Later that night, Sarty's father asks him if he would have lied for him and when Sarty doesn't answer, his father hits him in the head. Sarty's father tells him: "You're getting to be a man. You got to learn. You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain't going to have any blood to stick to". Sarty's father is referring to the blood bond between father and son, and he knows Sarty will respect that bond and do anything for him.
