Since 1999, people using the Internet, have been able to download free music from a web site called Napster. The web site has become very popular due to the large selection of music available and the fact that is free. Currently, Napster has over 800,000 users downloading music at any given time.

The problem with the free music, and the sharing of the free music, is that the artists who created the music are not getting any royalties. The music industry, in particularly the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), has filed suit against Napster and has been able to force the web site to ban songs, by certain groups, from being swapped. However, people are still able to bypass the ban by using different methods, one is by changing the names of the groups by

Throughout high school, Shaun Fanning split his time between sports and computers. After graduating, he went to Northeast University, where he was unchallenged by the computer classes that were higher then entry level. He spent much of his time in chat rooms with experienced programmers and his roommate, who loved MP3's. MP3's are compressed wave files that use one-tenth the space and have can have near CD quality. His roommate was frustrated by the unavailability of many songs as well as the lack of good search engines. This provided Shaun with his billion-dollar idea.

Colleges are for technology but are not for breaking laws to use the new technology. They also have other issues to deal with because of this new technology. For example, the Internet connection on campuses slows down because of the high traffic that this web site brings. Also, students are breaking copy copyright laws by downloading the music from the web site on campus to their computers or discs. This in turn is bringing legal action against the colleges from the RIAA.

Students are for Napster and the issue that Napster should be free to use. They think that since the technology is there it should be free. Also they say, it only promotes the music. If they hear something that they like then they will go out and buy it.
