. According to Marx, there are two groups of people existing in each society. The bourgeoisie is seen as the " class of modern capitalists, owners of the means of production and employers of wage labor". The bourgeoisie is a product of a long course of development, of a series of revolutions in the modes of production and of exchange over time. This class is responsible for the tearing apart of families and reduced the family relation to a mere money relation. Marx compares the bourgeoisie as "like a sorcerer who is no longer able to control the powers of the nether world which he has called up by his spells" (pg28). The other class, the proletariat, is the modern working class, consisting of a class of laborers who live for work and who find it only if their services help the capital gain of the bourgeoisie. Each person in the working class loses all individual character, often compared to a group of soldiers. Inequalities of wealth in capitalistic societies were directly ba!sed on ownership of land, buildings, machinery, factories- hence, the means of production. Marx's states, " Differences of age and sex (race) have no longer any distinctive social validity for the working class. All are instruments of labor, more or less
e)yes these experiences are shared by other ethnic minorities. Has nothing to do with social class as stated by Rodriguez. In response to the quote, the Asian women are again conforming to European society. f)Rodriguez plight reminds me of cedric in many ways. Cedric too tossled with two conflicting ideas. He was smart also but he was from the ghetto and unlike Rodriguez was proud because that was a unique factor. However beneath that superficial exterior he was resentful because he felt his environment also hindered him from excelling to the capacity of other students. Both were smart minorities who challenged themselves to excel above and beyond their peers. Cedric resented his mother because he felt he was being punished for wanting a better life, like his mother was another stumbling block in his life. Rodriguez resented both of his parents because he felt they were not as smart because they chose not to enter the mainstream culture. 5.a) he lets go of his past, his innocence as an unlearned Hispanic child and learns to conform to the European world that surrounds him. Education sets him apart from his family because they are not as smart as him. His mother and father are smart culturally. Obviously they have not adopted his same views of education as shown when his mother asked him for a book she could read "easily". He gives her one and later finds it on the floor beside her bed unfinished. In school, he adapted to the world of speaking articulately and at home his parents had not mastered that feature. Instead they spoke in their cultural dictation that reflected a lower class that he felt he was leaving behind. This life was ok while he didn't know any better. When he was introduced to an education, articulate people, and books, he felt a distant from home. t in. affirmative action gives the cedric's of the world a chance to succeed. As far as proposing mechanism for the compensation of racial and ethic groups that have experienced the loss of the land and or labor, I personally don't think there is any way to do that. I think that the only way to come close to compensating them for their oppression would be to give them even more opportunities for employment and educational success. That would include the desegregation of schools (literal, nit just written on paper) and a free secondary educational system. This would allow more opportunity to further minorities chances of success in the employment world. As far as compensation for land, Marx would have suggested giving equal portions of land to each family. But the bottom line is there is no real way to compensate the African and Native Americans for stealing their land or stealing them from their land along with their freedom, and using them for free labor. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ated opportunity for others. For example black women often struggle to find good jobs but that gives opportunity to white women who benefit from the oppression of black women. A sense of opportunity can also be seen in affirmative action. Affirmative action is Affirmative action helps give educational and employment opportunities to minorities facing oppression. With this in mind, opportunity is brought out of oppression. Although oppressed in many areas of resources, affirmative action allows for some opportunities to be gained. As far as the "righting the wrong". Affirmative action is a step in the right direction as far as compensation for the
