In Caryll Churchill's collaborative drama "Cloud Nine," there are some very interesting resonances between acts one and two. As readers, we have to pay close attention to the gender and ethnic background's of the actors, and the significance of who they are portraying. Throughout this play, there are many roles that are filled with cast members who by society, do not seem like the perfect fit for their character. By using the doubling and cross-dressing methods of drama, Churchill is able to develop the gender, race, and sexuality themes of the play.

The doubling of Clive and Cathy forced the readers to pay attention to who the actors were, and the significance of the role they were playing. Clive is a father-type figure, who is also the most dominating character throughout all of Caryll Churchill's play. His roles as a father, husband, and government administrator allow the readers to see why he is the character with the most control. Clive shows his dominance over the other characters in lines 129-155, when he makes Joshua apologize for being rude to his wife Betty earlier in the day. This scene allows the readers to see that Clive can take over a situation and make his black servant Joshua, feel inferior even though he

e tells Clive about what Joshua did. All though she seems "under" Clive, she is still above the black servant when she demands an apology from Joshua in line 152. Churchill shows that even though Betty is a woman, she is still superior over the black, male servant. Churchill really goes in to the racially oppressed with this situation because she demonstrates what it was like around those times of superiority over blacks. Churchill however, shows how Betty can still be sneaky and conniving when she tells Ellen that she is in love with Harry Bagley. This allows the reader to see that even though she faces the usual struggles as a woman, she still has needs and desires.

The second part of the doubling used with this actor is the character of Edward, who is Clive's and Betty's son. This doubling is important because there is only one other actor who plays two different people in the same act. (Ellen and Mrs. Saunders are played by the same person). Like the actor of Cathy, Edward's actor has to dramatically reduce his role and become less significant. Edward is a typical young boy who does what his father tells him to. Edward, like Cathy, speaks in one- line sentences, except for a few times, but also acts a little more mature than Cathy did. Churchill portrays Edward to be the usual kid around those times, but the character is played by a woman. In line 200, Edward is "minding" the doll for his sister, and admits that the doll is his and he likes playing with it. This allows the readers to get an understanding that like Ellen and Harry bagley, Edward might be g
