Genocide

Genocide has been and continues to be, a very serious problem for the entire world. Time and time again acts of genocide have been committed over the past 100 years. The three examples I will use throughout the essay are: the Armenians, the German Holocaust, and the Rwandans. I will be comparing similarities of how each horrifying act began, and what measures were taken to stop it. I will show the racial, ethnic, and religious reasons behind these genocidal acts. Also the economies of these countries were at an all time low, which played a key role in the beginning of these acts. Although all of these are very important points, the main question is figuring out where the responsibility lies: with the countries who commit the act, or the countries who do nothing to stop these genocidal acts?

First, I believe that the most important and strongest reason for why genocide happens is ethnic discrimination. In each example: the Armenians, the German Holocaust, and the Rwandans, ethnic discrimination was a key component. This similarity is amazing for the fact that the Turks discriminated against the Armenians. The Germans discriminated against the Jews, and the Hutu's over the Tutsi's. E

ethnic group to believe they are superior to another blows my mind, but this is exactly what happened. Adolf Hitler used the knowledge of the Turks committing their genocide over the Armenians, and he knew the rest of the world did nothing to stop it as long as they said it was war casualties (Senecal Spring 2001). So, he used this knowledge and called the genocide against the Jewish population, casualties of war (Night). Therefore, the rest of the outside world did nothing to stop him. They basically left the Jewish population helpless against a monster. This same approach was also used in Rwandan genocide. The Hutu's knew even though there were United Nation troops in Rwanda, they would do nothing to stop the genocide until it had gotten way out of hand ("The Triumpph of Evil"). This is the approach the world has taken on genocide in each occasion I've discussed, and the groups committing the acts know they can get away with it.

countries with our same relative power have an equal responsibility. I feel the countries that allowed these acts to happen are to some degree more at fault. The reason being is, since we did nothing to stop it, means we basically did not disagree with what was going on. Further more is sending a message that we basically approved of what was going on. I think this sends the message that the countries that did nothing to prevent these genocides are just as guilty of the crimes as the cultures that actually carried the crimes out.

The state at which each country was in at the time of the genocides was extremely crucial. For example, the Turkish genocide happened at the end of the Ottoman Empire. The empire was crumbling with a terrible economy and the people needed someone to blame their downfall on, hence the Armenians. In comparison, the German's economy was terrible after World War I, because they were trying to pay off all their debts of the war to the other countries. This made the German citizens very angry and devastated so they needed someone to blame, the Jews (Night). Also, before the Rwandan genocide, the Hutu's needed to blame the T
