The Jungle
Evil, Immoral, and death all relate to the word darkness in The Jungle, a book written by Upton Sinclair. Jurgis, a Lithuanian is migrating to America with his eleven family members. Jurgis, along with his family has, his eyes set on money and happiness in America. But it didn't quite turn out that way he and his family obtained jobs but benefitted nothing from them. As if they were headed nowhere fast, all they got was death and sickness. Soon Jurgis joined the Socialist party and tried to survive in the American society. Darkness symbolizes a no way out situation, and also evil situations, similar to how Jurgis and his family felt. The word darkness can be used as a powerful expression, and is in relation with the color black. Sinclair looks at Jurgis as having, "....great black eyes...and thick black hair...", in the beginning of the book. Great black eyes and thick black hair, can also be thought of as evil. Or maybe get your mind to think about some type of evilness. Unlike other colors black sticks out the most, so when the words blackness or darkness are used, it can make the person or situation appear to be dominant or even controlling. This is a way Simclair uses darkness in relation to a person or situati
The color black, in an evil way, can relate to death and murder. Sinclair states that when talking about the murder in the " killing beds " of the pig, stating that the pigs shadow is testing his fate. By using black the reader could sense something bad happening to the pig such as a death or murder. Also touching bases on the immoral parts, black is darkness, and in darkness you cannot see. The pig felt like that, because it trusted the humans but couldn't see, as it was being lead into the wrong direction. Saying that animals in a way are handicap compared to humans, because they should be able to live just as us, but they have no say so. So black, smoke, darkness, and death can all describe this book, but something just a little bit deeper should be looked at......life. Because life isn't always what it appears to be, and everyone isn't always given the same chances. Socialism is what Sinclair was trying to stress, because you can't make it in this society alone. Everyone needs help, even those that are on top, and capitalism doesn't look at that. People are considered " smart " only because there are some called " dumb ". And people are " rich ", only because there are those that are poor. Thi
