Malcolm X was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska to Earl and Louise Little. African-American pride was rooted deeply in Malcolm's family. Earl was a positive, independent Georgia Baptist Minister, and an organizer for Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association, a back to Africa" group in the 20's. In 1963, he departed from the nation of Islam and began his own pilgrimage to Mecca and Saudi Arabia. He began to appreciate the diversity of different races and cultures. After he left the Nation of Islam, his time became very valuable. He made frequent public appearances in order to raise money for his family and to start his life again. His analysis for religion and the problems of racism were now viewed differently. He believed that once someone, who was respected by all acted with God, the true equality would connect and everyone would be accepted as a human being rather than a person of one color, culture, or religion.

In the weeks preceding Malcolm's murder he received numerous death threats. He addressed the Civil Rights protesters in Selma, Alabama, during the last month of his life. He was scheduled to address the Mississippi Freedom Democrats in Jackson, Mississippi. This was the southern movement directed by Dr. Martin Luther King. By joining the movement Malcolm hoped to win equality for black people throughout the country. On February 25, 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated. He was lecturing a group in the Audubon ballroom in Harlem on the Organization of Afro-American unity. As an argument began to break out, Malcolm tried to calm the crowd.
