After Rome's fall in 395 A.D. the Byzantine Empire then took over Macedonia and all of Eastern Europe. Slavs moved into the country around the 6th century. From the 9th century on the debate of whose land it really was. This debate lasted until the 14th century when the Ottoman Empire took over the land. Serbia during the second Balkan war took one of the largest pieces of land. As with each country having its main purpose to expand, Serbia feels that Macedonia should stay a part of new Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro). They also claim that since they spent so much money on helping the country, that they should do it as an act of kindness, although all of the ethnic Albanians in Kosovo were sent to Macedonia from Serbia for relief.
