The Cask of Amontillado

The story "The Cask of Amontillado" contains various types of ironies, such as: verbal, situational and dramatic. These types of ironies are defined as follows :Irony is the difference between what is said what is implied, verbal irony, between what is expected to happen and what happens or what appear to be and what is, situational irony, and between what one knows and what one does not know, dramatic irony. The characters in the "The Cask of Amontillado" use constant irony during the story. The subject of what will occur in Fortunato's future as well as the his faith and Montresor's revenge all contain these types of irony, which is underlined in the story as well as the characters discussions.

Verbal irony is found at the very beginning when Montresor says, " At length I would be avenged". This passage is referring to the insult that was caused by Fortunato on Montresor and the revenge, which Montresor plans on taking on him for those injuries, caused by Fortunato. The "length" as referred to in the passage, is of course a foreshadowing of the fait Montresor has planned for Fortunato, because not only will he meet his end, but also he will suffer a long punitive death. Another example of verbal irony lies in the following pa

Situational irony is also very common in this short story, for example, when Montresor says, " My heart grew sick - on account of the dampness of the catacombs". This passage is ironic for the following reason, here we have a situation where a man, Montresor, is about to put another's life, Fortunato, to an end and the only thing that sickens him is the dampness of the catacombs where he stands and where he's crime will be committed. Of course, it is ironic that Montresor cannot feel any sickness towards the horrible deed that he will commit. A second example of situational irony is the following, " For half of a century no mortal has disturbed them", this passage reveals something to the reader that he did not expect, it was not clear nor understood that this was account of what happened may years ago. This misunderstanding between the reader and the unpredicted ending of the story is due to the irony that lies in the reader's mind. Why would someone be so foolish as to still!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

This story is in fact a perfect example of pure ironic literature in which the author makes the reader think, in order to better understand the story as well as to better understand the main character. The use of irony in this short story by Edgar Allan Poe is essential to the outcome of the story, the foreshadowing of
