David Buller and Judee Burgoon are professors of communication at the University of Arizona. Together Buller and Burgoon developed the theory of interpersonal deception. This theory provides an explanation for the way deceivers and the deceived interact with each other during a deceitful interaction (Griffin 93). Along with other communication professors, Buller and Burgoon performed dozens of experiments on how an individual's demeanor changes when telling the truth as opposed to when they are involved in deceitful practices (Buller and Burgoon 669). The two theorists claim that in a deceitful interaction both the sender and the receiver have different views on whether the deceitful interaction was noticeable when compared to the truth (Buller and Burgoon 726). Take this particular situation for example. Your significant other's birthday is a few days away. You have not mentioned a thing about it yet because you want to give him/her the impression that you forgot, when in reality you have been planning a big surprise party for months. The day before the surprise party, you partner approaches you and says, "Do you even care that my birthday is tomorrow? You haven't even mentioned it, a
re you gong to do anything for my birthday?" What is your response? Do you lie or, in regards to interpersonal deception theory, create a falsification? "I'm sorry honey, but it completely slipped my mind." On the other hand, would using the tactic of concealment be the best choice? Concealment is the practice of hiding the truth; an example would be "I think you will be happy with the plans I have made for us tomorrow." The final tactic you could use, without blowing the surprise and coming out with the complete truth is equivocation, dodging t! Buller and Burgoon make the assertion that; a person's disposition changes when they are deceiving another relative to the skill of the deceiver at deception (Griffin 92). A person whose skill at deception is on the weak side will display what Buller and Burgoon refer to as leakage. The deceiver will try to be very evasive, they will not be clear with information and will display unnatural behaviors such as: less eye contact, anxiousness, restlessness, exhibit less expression and be less attentive to their situation (Buller and Burgoon 736). These are "valves" through which leakage occurs. The skilled deceiver, however, will try to distract the receiver from picking up these clues to his/her deception. Through their experiments, Buller and Burgoon found that in the majority of instances the receivers were unable to consistently tell whether the sender was being deceitful (Buller and Burgoon 732).
