In The Odyssey I would have to say Odysseus is the main character, but without Athena’s help he would have never gotten the opportunity to get home to his family because he loves them so much. She has worked so hard to reunite Odysseus with his wife Penelope and son Telemakhos. Athena disguises herself many times in the book. I always asked myself why, and it dawned on me that people listen better when she was someone that Odysseus and Telemakhos trusted and respected. Athena has a lot of love for Odysseus and even though he has upset Poseidon she knows he is a brave man with a lot of honor.

The first time that Athena appears in The Odyssey was in Book I when Zeus calls a divine council. Athena is there and interrupts her father. She asks Zeus about Odysseus and if he will allow him to return to. Zeus replied by saying, “could I forget that kingly man, Odysseus? There is no mortal half so wise; no mortal gave so much to the lords of open sky.” So you can tell that Zeus does like Odysseus. Athena then tells Zeus,

“ O Majesty, O Father of us all, if it now pleases the blissful gods that wise Odysseus reach his home again, let the Wayfinder, Hermes, cross the sea to the island of Ogygia; let him tell our

Now that Telemakhos is off on his adventure trying to find his father, Athena must go back to Zeus and get his help in letting Odysseus know he is free. Athena once more approaches Zeus, asking him to let Odysseus go by saying to him,

When Telemakhos approaches the swine herder he notices the stranger. He explains the propose of the guest and he heads back into the hut. Odysseus saw Athena in the background. After the swine herder left Athena turns Odysseus back into his old self. Telemakhos was amazed, and at first did not believe it. Odysseus explains why he is in the disguise and the plan they are going to use to avenge the suitors.

This is why Athena is so important in the story. I do not think Telemakhos would be able to go looking for his father with all the suitors left at his home. He would be to scare. Athena disguised as Mentes gives Telemakhos that confidence. Then when Telemakhos needs a crew Athena says she will take care of that. She disguises herself as Mentes and goes in town and finds him a crew. Once She leaves Telemakhos she changes herself into Telemakhos to talk to the town’s people. So now Athena has convinced Telemakhos that he should go looking for his father, has found him a crew of loyal oarsmen, and now she helps Telemakhos sail to Pylos. Athena could just outright tell Odysseus where his father is, but by him going out and searching the many islands Telemakhos will become brave like his father. He is going to need that for later in the story when Odysseus and him must kill the suitors.

So Odysseus does what Ino says and heads to shore. When he gets to land he finds a place to sleep.

“Her it is grandfer, sir-that mansion house you asked to see. You’ll find our king and queen at supper, but you must not be dismayed; go in to them. A cheerful man does best in every enterprise-even a stranger.”

“How so remiss, and yet the mothers daughter? Leaving thy clothes uncared for, Nausikaa, when soon thou must have linen store of marriage linen, and put thy minstrelsy in wedding dress.”
