In Shakespeare's "Hamlet", there are many events throughout the play that present a theme of madness. Shakespeare provides the reader with evidence concerning Hamlet's sanity beginning with the first scene of the play. The guards, whose main purpose in the play was to give credibility to the ghost of Hamlet's dead father, approach Hamlet with an ominous sighting. Hamlet's actions led everyone, except Horatio to believe that Hamlet was insane. However, other parts of the play lead the reader to believe that he was sane. Many critics frequently argue the madness of Hamlet. It's difficult to label Hamlet as either sane or insane, especially when he implies to Horatio that he would only act mad. Also, at the end of the play when Hamlet was dying, he stopped Horatio from killing himself, which showed that he was thinking clearly.
