Poe

The Everlasting Fight Between Good and Evil

The story I read was "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allen Poe. I found this story to be very interesting. I found that the story's underlying message is "Everyone who fights evil will be killed, but good will still come to save the day." To explain this and back this up, I will describe the characters. I will describe whether they are active, passive, static, or dynamic, and of course give examples to back up my reasons of how and why they are the way they are. Then while I am doing this, I will describe their fight between good and evil in with the descriptions and reasons for the character's being the way they are. After I explain all of the latter, there should be no doubt that the story's underlying message is "Everyone who fights evil will be killed, but good will still come to save the day."

The husband is as good as a place as any to start. The husband is very dynamic and he is also very passive. How is he passive? Well, he turns evil. He goes deep into the trenches of evil. He goes as deep as he could possibly get. He goes in stages of turning evil. Obviously, to turn evil, you must first be good. "From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my dispo

erament and character-through the instrumentality of the Fiend Intemperance-had (I blush to confess it) experienced a radical alteration for the worse. I grew, day by day, more moody, more irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others." (Cat,pg.545-6,P6.ln1-5). Needless to say, he was turning in to a, not very nice, guy. He starts to mis-treat the animals and he even offers his wife personal violence. This is a long way off of the boy who was made fun of because he loved animals so much and because he was so nice. "My pets, of course, were made to feel the change in my disposition. I not only neglected, but ill-used them. For Pluto, however, I still retained sufficient regard to restrain me from maltreating him, as I made no scruple of maltreating the rabbits, the monkey, or even the dog, when by accident, or through affection, they came in my way." (Cat,pg.546,ln.4-8). This guy is starting to turn wacko. He is beating all of the animals that he once loved. He!

, of course, later, became an act of torment for the man also. The next act of torment was basically killing the man with kindness. Pluto knew that the man would despise the him if he were around it all of the time. So, that is what he did. "With my aversion to this cat, however, its partiality for myself seemed to increase. It followed my footsteps with a pertinacity which it would be difficult to make the reader comprehend. Whenever I sat, it would crouch beneath my chair, or spring upon my knees, covering me with it's loathsome caresses." (Cat.pg.548,P4.ln.1-4). Pluto drives the man crazy to the point that he kills his wife and walls her up. The exact moment that good won over evil is when Pluto spoke the word of victory. He called attention to the cops and the man was caught.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The fight between good and evil is the fight between the man and Pluto. The man is evil and Pluto is good. After laying out the characteristics of the characters and describing their individual fights, or no fights, in the man's case, with evil, there should be enough evidence to convict the message of the story. "Everyone who
