EPA
The EPA is an organization who's sole purpose is to preserve the environment we live in. EPA stands for Environmental Protection Agency and is responsible for many Environmental holidays we celebrate today. Throughout this report I hope to give the reader some insight on the projects that the EPA has conducted in the past and present. Before we begin to look at the projects the EPA has conducted lets first find out what the EPA is all about. The EPA was established as an independent agency on December 2, 1970. Before this however it was an organization that was just a vision. President Nixon's advisors thought that the environment was in serious trouble, and these issues needed to be dealt with. There were many recommendations on what to do about these problems. The EPA was not the Environmental Protection Agency right from the beginning. In fact it was named the Environmental Protection Administration. Included below are the functions that the Environmental Protection Administration was supposed to have. Environmental ProtectionAdministration 1. Monitoring: Observe, record, understand, and predict the atmospheric and aquatic environments. 2. Research: Contaminant tracing technology an
BETTER WASTE MANAGEMENT, RESTORATION OF CONTAMINATED WASTE SITES, AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE: America's wastes will be stored, treated, and disposed of in ways that prevent harm to people and to the natural environment. EPA will work to clean up previously polluted sites, restoring them to uses appropriate for surrounding communities, and respond to and prevent waste-related or industrial accidents. The mission of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment--air, water, and land--upon which life depends. The Environmental Protection Administration changed to the Environmental Protection Agency on December 2nd, 1970. The following is the complete purposes of the Environmental Protection Agency: CLEAN AND SAFE WATER: All Americans will have drinking water that is clean and safe to drink. Effective protection of America's rivers, lakes, wetlands, aquifers, and coastal and ocean waters will sustain fish, plants, and wildlife, as well as recreational, subsistence, and economic activities. Watersheds and their aquatic ecosystems will be restored and protected to improve public health, enhance water quality, reduce flooding, and provide habitat for wildlife. After British scientists report a giant hole in the Earth's protective atmospheric ozone layer, EPA joins an international convention in Vienna calling for worldwide cooperative efforts to eliminate use of substances that deplete the ozone layer. SAFE FOOD: The foods Americans eat will be free from unsafe pesticide residues. Children especially will be protected from the health threats posed by pesticide residues, because they are among the most vulnerable groups in our society. Environmental ControlAdministration(from HEW) · The EPA also announced a 3 million dollar grant to the towns of New Shoreham, South Kingston, and Charleston. This three Million dollar grant is supposed to help to make an innovative septic-system management programs for protecting sensitive ecosystems such as Green Hill Pond and the Great Salt Pond. Because of their potential for causing cancer and other adverse health effects, EPA bans two herbicides containing dioxins, chemical compounds that are byproducts of certain industrial activities that cause cancer and other adverse health effects. One of the herbicides was an ingredient in the defoliant Agent Orange.
