world war 1

The beginning of the twentieth century was supposed to be the century of brotherhood. Europe had a collective of alliances that was supposed to keep the mother countries out of war between each other. It was believed that cooperation was the ideology of the European empires, but it was slowly changing to competition. The mighty empires were trying to get as much land as possible from one another. The differences between the empires were coming to a climatic time in european history. It all started from one incident that took place in a little county called Serbia. This would forever change the look and feel of Europe for years to come. It would bring a war like none ever scene, with world implications and millions dead. It was supposed to be the wars to end all wars, but in fact would bring on even worse consequences then anyone could have ever imagined.

The unrest of Austria-Hungary and Russia was coming to a front. On one side you have the Austria-Hungary empire that like most of Europe was very Nationalistic. They did not get along with their neighbors. On the other side you have the Russian Empire that was headed by Czar Nicholas II. Russia was a very old empire that would not back away from a fight. The tensio

With the war over the next issue was what to do with the central powers. The European powers wanted them to pay, so on June 28 1919 the treaty of Versailles was put in order. The treaty said that Germany and Austria-Hungary started the war so they should pay for all of the destruction and cost that was inflicted on the allied powers. Also Germany had to lower its army to 100,000 men and get rid of its air force and reduce its navy. This was to make sure that Germany would not be a threat to Europe again. Germany also lost territory of alsace and lorraine to France and the Rhineland was made into a demilitarized zone to make a buffer between Germany and France. Austria-Hungary was demolished and cut up into many different countries. The allied powers thought that this would keep from another horrible war like that from happening ever again. Unfortunately this was not the fix that Europe had hoped. In fact it was because of these poor decisions that would bring the next world !

4.http://www.fylde.demon.co.uk/welcome.htm - first hand accounts of the war.

The Germans with out the consent of Belgium sent its troops through and into France, were they were stopped by French troops twenty miles out side of Paris. Neither side was able to push the other out of the way, the war quickly became a stale mate. Both sides started to dig trenches to keep anyone from advancing forward. The trenches got to become so big that they reached from the english channel to the swiss mountains. They were an elaborate system of defense. They were protected by machine guns, heavy artillery and huge walls of barbed wire. This is were the western front would be fought for the next four years. The problem that the army generals were having was that they had never fought a war like that before. They were taught how to fight a war with maneuvers and actual movement. So the strategy that each side came up with was to bombard the enemy lines with artillery. Then send a whole mess of troops across the lines and to try to flush out the enemy and then they coul!

Some of the biggest contributors to the stale mates on the fronts was the new technology. One of the deadliest new weapons was the new and improved machine gun. This would let a single man spray a massive amounts of bullets over a large area. This weapon was what caused so much damage during the war. When the solders attacked a trench line there would be machine gunners spraying bullets across the field and the solders running would not have a chance. Some would get gunned down before they even got all of there bodies out of their trenches. Another deadly weapon that was brought into the war was mustard gas. This was the first time that chemical war fare took place. The mustard gas would burn the inside of your lungs and you would die a slow and painful death. This was a very effective weapon that was cheap and could kill large amounts of troops. It was also the last time it was used in a war, because it was so gruesome and inhumane. Another Instrument that was used as a weap!
