star obsession

It is no illusion, that in America, most everyone dreams of being a star of some sort, whether it be a rap star, rock star, movie star, or some kind of famous athlete. Star obsession impacts people in many different ways. Some ways that come to mind may be for example, a need for spectator attention, for a great deal of money, for the mystique people generally find in stardom, and where children tend to emulate stars.

There are people who have that fond memory of imitating their favorite star, wanting to be like them. I remember when I used to go out onto my driveway with my basketball and pretend that I was Michael Jordan in game seven of the NBA playoffs. I would count down the seconds from five and give the basketball a final heave at one second towards the basket hoping it would go in and if it did not, I would do the same sequence over and over again until I made the shot. When I did happen to make the shot, I would imagine the crowd was going crazy and I would run around the driveway screaming and jumping around with my hands in the air pointing at the imaginary crowd as if I were at my own little basketball arena. But, what makes an individual d

Power Money infomercial. December 1999.

I have many friends that look up to rap stars and rock stars. If one of my friends see his/her favorite musical artist wearing something new, like a certain pair of sneakers, they will go out and buy the sneakers just because their favorite musical artist is wearing them. For example: In a magazine article of The Source, the rapper, Prodigy, stands on a New York City street corner with his legs spread apart and arms folded as if to say, "I

I now realize, being nineteen years old, that the real reason I wanted to be like Mike, was because he has money and a lot of it. Off the basketball court, Jordan does anything he pleases. He has a beautiful wife and kids, three or more very expensive cars, a mansion, and a maid for the mansion. Who wouldn't want to live like this? I would love to run up and down a basketball court for forty five minuets a game, shower, get into my Mercedes Benz, and go home to my mansion where my beautiful wife is waiting.

Americans want to be rich. Children use stars as role models, because they want to be just like them. Teenagers use stars as role models because, they think if they act like them and dress like them, then they can be rich like them. Stars have a tremendous impact on a persons life. Some are positive, such as image stimulation. But, some are negative such as, emulating stars who promote crime and moral unrest. It's not just the younger generation that is influenced by stars and wanting to make money. Older Americans also have this flaw. Whenever something like the Power Money infomercial comes on the television screen, Americans have a tendency to give into these pointless ploys to make money. As much as we do not want to believe we are obsessed with money it is just an illusion.
