Isomnia comes in many different flavors: Diffuculty falling asleep; no problem falling asleep but difficulty staying asleep; or waking up too early. It affects from 10 to 17 percent of adults in the U.S. (4). In most cases, insomnia comes from some other underlying reason. The three basic types of insomnia are transient, short-term, and chronic. Transient insomnia lasts for only a few nights, while short-term insomnia can last from trwo to four weeks. In a case of chronic insomnia, the person has poor sleep most nights lasting month or longer. Transient and short-term are generally what occurs when people are having some sort of temporary stress or change in atmosphere. Examples would be an environmental noise, extreme temperature chagne, sleep/wake schedule problems (e.g. jet lag), worries about a certain event, or side effects due to medication. In the case of temperature, it is interesting to note that a hot room or too many sleeping clothes may induce nightmar!
