Interesting Fact About the Author: George Orwell is the pen name of Eric Blair. Winston Smith is a Party member who has lost his ideals of Ingsoc (English Socialism). To escape Big Brother's tyranny, Winston finds ways to rebel; he keeps a diary and commits adultery. However, when he is turned in by a member of the Thought Police, a befriended O'Brien tortures Winston to the point that he betrays his one true love and achieves a strong admiration for Big Brother. -Winston Smith- He is the protagonist of the book who is against the Party. Throughout the book, Winston tries to live a life of human dignity and privacy while trying to prolong the time in which he will inevitably be caught by the Thought Police.
