The Life of Oscar Romero
"Peace is not the product of terror or fear. Peace is not the silence of cemeteries. Peace is not the silent result of violent repression. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is right and it is duty.(Works Cited- #1)"Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdamez (More commonly known as Archbishop Oscar Romero) was one of the most influential voices in the fight for peace this century. Romero faced incredible opposition which he was able to overcome and used the Church as a light of hope to challenge his oppressors. On August 15, 1917, the world was blessed with a young boy named Oscar Arnulfo Romero(y Galdamez). He lived in Ciudad Barrios in San Miguel, El Salvador. At this time in history, his town was under great oppression. San Miguel was considered a National Security State(NSS). A NSS is a place where the military is accountable to none and the people are defenseless against tyranny and oppression(no peace). San Miguel was ravaged by poverty, injustice, and sorrow, which Romero dedicated his life to end. He brought hope and happiness to this poor, repressed country in a time where none e
so hard that shortly before his death he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. This nomination shows just how widely recognized Romero's work was. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Romero's spirit will shine forever. This is best expressed in a statement given by Romero himself, "I have frequently been threatened with death. I must tell you that, as a Christian, I do not believe in death but in resurrection. If they kill me, I will rise again in the Salvadorian people.(Works Cited- #4)" In my opinion this statement couldn't be any truer. "Today El Salvador remains a country of misery and injustice. Yet Romero's spirit lives on and his teachings remain. The people of the world must remember him and continue to strive for the realization of his dream: truth, justice, dignity, and human rights.(Works Cited- #5)" I believe the people, not only of El Salvador, but of the world have done just this in many ways. A Mosenor Oscar Romero University has been established in his name along with The National Forest of Reconciliation. The Mosenor Oscar Romero University was founded upon the basis of the Archbishop's teachings, and most specifi! - Uniting our efforts "with those of people of good will in order to uproot poverty and create a more just and fraternal world."
