Cloning
For humans to consider the cloning of one another forces them all to question the very concepts of right and wrong that make them all human. Aside from a few valid ethical arguments against it, I support the move to clone humans.. Scientists and ethicists alike have debated the implications of human and non-human cloning extensively since 1997 when scientists at the Roslin Institute in Scotland produced Dolly. From that point on, scientists have made plans to use cloning as an effort to come up with new treatments to diseases and other experiments. Splitting an embryo mat seem a great technological leap, but in a world where embryos are already created in test tubes, it's a baby step. The current challenge in reproductive medicine is not to produce more embryos but to identify healthy ones and get them to grow in the womb. Using genetic tests, doctors can now screen embryonic cells for hereditary diseases. In the not to distant future, prenatal tests may also help predict such common problems as obesity, depression and heart disease. March 2, 1998 VOL. 151 NO. 8, TIME For a while now, couples have been using in vitro fertilization, where the sperm and egg are combined and surgically implanted in the womb. When this process first debuted there was a lot of controversy sourrounding it as well. Today, we rarely hear of "test-tube babies" at all. In vitro fertilization has made many parents happy. Some of the worlds most powerful people have felt the need to act against cloning. Former President Clinton proposed a ban on federal funding for cloning research. However, human cloning should not be made illegal by the government. Cloning could provide a way for sterile individuals to reproduce and it my open a door for homosexual couples to reproduce as well. Cloning could provide a great deal of research for scientists as far as reproduction and development. However, if made illegal in the U.S. it could very well take place in the Middle East, Asia or Eastern Europe. Some may say that cloning is playing God.
