Hard Drugs Should Remain Illegal

Throughout recent history, there has been much debate over the issue of the government's war on drugs. Some people feel that drugs should be legalized, while others believe that the punishments should be even harsher than they are today. In between these two opinions are the others who feel that some drugs should have limitations. Certain drugs would only cause harm for our society if they were to be legalized. Hard drugs is one of those which would be detrimental. If the government were to decide to legalize these substances, America would see an unbelievable amount of negative changes. In this paper I will maintain the fact that hard drugs should not be legalized.

I feel that a powerful argument against the legalization of hard drugs is as follows:

1. The government should not legalize things that will only cause harm.

2. Hard drugs (crack, cocaine, heroin) can only cause harm.

3. Therefore, the government should not legalize hard drugs.

The first premise is a basic concept. It is a common understanding that the government was formed in order to arrange a better country. If they were to legalize substances and other things that would only be detrimental to society, then the government would not be helping to form a gre

Addiction is probably the most harmful thing that ensues from the use of such drugs. People become highly addicted after using these substances just one time. The addiction causes people to lose all self-control. All the user can think about is where their next "fix" is going to come from. This is extremely injurious to this person as well as those around him or her. The addiction is almost like a disease, but one that is extremely difficult to cure.

Hard drugs, such as crack, cocaine, and heroin can only bring harm in our society. There is an unbelievable amount of destructive things that come out of these types of drugs. They could easily be considered one of the most damaging things in our society as it is. There is not anything good or beneficial that could result from the use of hard drugs.

In response to that, I would have to disagree completely. No matter how inexpensive these drugs are, people who are highly addicted to heroin, crack, or cocaine use so much that eventually, they are going to run out of money. People who are addicted to these drugs seem to be so wrapped up in this other world that they are in, that it would be difficult for them to hold down a job. When a person cannot hold down a job, then they are no longer making any money. Without money, drug addicts are forced to rob and steal in order to get the money to buy more drugs. It really has nothing to do with the price. When people get so caught up in these drugs that they can no longer support themselves, they will resort to stealing from whoever they can in order to be able to get more drugs.

The critic also believes that by legalizing drugs, numerous benefits would be brought about. They believe the misconceptions that the legalization of drugs would cause a large decrease in the crime rate. It would also allow for standards to be set about the contents of drugs, thus making them safer. By legally allowing citizens the right to do drugs, which would be made safer, the government would be permitting many advantages to occur in our society.

To these people, I respond that no matter how "safe" these hard drugs become, the negative side of hard drug use far outweighs any positive points.

From premise (1) and (2) it understandably ensues that the legalization of hard drugs would be extremely harmful to society. There is not any good that would come out of having hard drugs being sold in stores. Imagine having your kids grow up in a society where they go in a store to buy candy and it is sitting right next to the heroin aisle. This is not a good way for our children to have to be raised. This would completely desensitize children to the dan
