My Philosophy of Coaching

The philosophy of coaching that I want to express to my players is that playing sports is a gift. I believe all athletes should approach sports that way. Sports were made to give normal people ways to have fun, and that is the way sports should be continually looked at. I value all sports and I value the way that I am lucky enough to be able to play and to coach sports. I value the togetherness that sports bring as well as the competitiveness that derives from competition.

As a coach, I believe that often athletes do not stop and think about how fortunate they really are. Athletes need to be happy about the gifts they were given. As a coach, I also believe in sports always being fun. Sports were invented to promote fun and I always want to keep it that way. When sports stop being fun then they are not worth being involved in.

I have formed this philosophy from a combination of things. My parents have never forced me to join anything sports-related. They have always told me that I should do what I want and if I choose to be involved in sports they would support me. From this I gained that sports are to be played for fun and not for any other reason. My parents also taught me that not

hing is given and that I should take advantage of my gifts. Again, I believe that being able to play sports is a gift. That is something that should never be overlooked.

Motivation is a very popular topic among beginning coaches. New coaches need to know how they will motivate their team in game play. I believe that if a player goes out for a sport, then that player should already want to play the game. It is now my job to motivate them to work hard and to be the best they can, and in turn, this hopefully will get them to win games. I will motivate my team by setting goals for them to follow throughout the season. These goals will start small but will work their way up and become long term. For instance, we will set a goal in the off-season that explain how each player can improve. Then as the season progresses, we will set goals concerning how many games we want to win. This will also give my players something to work for every day.

Cutting a squad member would be one of the hardest parts of coaching basketball. If the kid tries hard and shows interest in the game, I will do all that I can to keep all the players. I have a hard time telling someone, "Sorry, you are not good enough to be on my team." This will probably hurt a young athlete and possibly discourage them from the sport. I have never experienced any cutting of team members because my school kept everyone and that was usually a low enough number to all fit on the team.

It is hard to say how I will react to certain aspects in the coaching field. I believe that I will react when the time comes. All of the areas I have discussed here are all factors that coaches defiantly will experience while they are working in the field. In coaching it is imperative that a coach be a good people person. Nearly all of a coach's job is dealing with other people. I believe that I would be a good basketball coach because I am a people person and I enjoy teaching people about the great sport of basketball.

Many times coaches at high schools are also teachers. It is important for these coaches to have good relationships with the other members of the faculty at the school. All teachers want to be treated with respect. I would expect the other members of the faculty to support my athletic team, just as I will support their full-time teacher duties. Concerning a coach's own coaching staff, there must be great cooperation between all of the members of the staff. If a head coach cannot get along with his staff then it will be a long season. I will only hire a staff that I know I can trust. If I can trust them, then I will be able to fully explain my ideas as well as use theirs. My staff can always trust me because I will include them all of the important decisions and never take their duties of their support for granted.

A coach's emotional control is a popular topic in sports today. I believe it is important that coaches be able to control themselves while on the sidelines during a basketball game or any other sporting event. Coaching is an active job, not a passive job. I believe coaches should be active and v
