The Article I choose for this assignment was entitled: "Jocks, Nerds, Babes and Thugs: A Research Note On Regional Differences in Adolescent Gender Norms" By: J.Jill Suitor and Rebecca S. Carter1) The thesis for this study is that regional differences do play a part in how there are gender norms for boys and girls. The hypothesis is that there would be greater gender differences in adolescents avenues to prestige among Southerners than Northerners, given the more traditional attitudes found among Southern adults. The independent variable would be gender differences while the dependent variable if regional differences. 2) The authors had found that much of the literature that they had studied went in favor of their hypothesis. Much of the research had been done only on adults, so they decided to take it a step down and focus on adolescents and make it more specific as to who they were discussing. They did find even in the
4) The contribution that Carter and suitor were hoping to make was to prove their hypothesis and show that gender norms are much more regional. The wanted to do a comprehensive study that showed school and town size did play a difference. They wanted it to be another stepping stone in the previous studies that had been done. They focused on an angle that no on had considered adolescents. They were able to gain some new insights for this topic and made a good case for themselves. 6) The findings were that were based on 6 most common avenues of prestige: grades, intelligence, sociability, participation in sports, physical appearance, popularity with the opposite sex. They found that in many of the categories there was very little regional difference overall.
