In World War II a new form of battlefield warfare was introduced. "Blitzkrieg," meaning lightning war took advantage of new technology, surprise attacks, and a new fluid motion of attacks. The Blitzkrieg was crucial to World War II and, may have been the largest factor in Hitler's domination for most of the war. The Blitzkrieg was a military tactic inaugurated by Hitler. It was used in the Polish and French campaigns of 1939 and 1940. This tactic was to no longer focus on the ridiculous form of battle in which holes were dug and artillery shells were thrown at one another (Snyder-Third Reich). Field artillery, new to World War II was used in close cooperation and coordination with infantry, tanks, and other units of the German forces. The rapid massing of field artillery fire led to new developments in the design of sights, carriages, and operating equipment. Light forces, such as motorcycle infantry, light trucks, and motor-drawn artillery were sent ahead to put a dent in enemy forces. Next the heavier tanks and artillery were sent ahead to back up the smaller vehicles. Finally, the last step of the blitzkrieg was the deployment of regular infantry.
