Social differences between sex, race, class, and prestige
Sociological Differences Between Men, Women, Blacks, and Whites Have you ever wondered how you compare with the opposite sex in income level, highest year of high school completed, or occupational prestige? If you are white or black, have you ever thought about your equality? I have researched the General Social Survey (GSS) from the 1996 data set and analyzed the significance of these specific variables. The variables I am referring to are education level, occupational prestige, and income. I will report my hypotheses on these variables and compare them with the actual data. When I looked at the data for highest level of high school completed for males and females, I would have thought that males would be more likely to finish high school. This was, in fact, the case. Males had a significantly higher level of high school completed. I believe this is because of younger
In conclusion, I feel that there should have not been as many differences in blacks and whites when dealing with issues of income, occupational prestige, and level of school completed. On the other hand, I expected that women and men are finally fairly equal in these areas. This study shows the current trends in society between blacks and whites, and men and women. It is important for sociologists to study these variables to make conclusions on issues such as equality, Affirmative Action, and racism. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Finally, another significant difference between blacks and whites was in occupational prestige. Once again, white people have a higher level of occupational prestige than blacks. This data seems more reasonable, however, it does say something for equality today. This data seems to prove me wrong in that I would have thought there
