Evil and Good in Animal Farm

George Orwell's Animal Farm is an allegorical story which criticizes Communist Russia under Joseph Stalin's rule. It contains many allusions to Communist Russia that directly relate to the central theme of the novel: evil can prevail over good, especially when applied to government. Animal Farm's theme of evil prevailing over good is important to society because it shows how easy it is for a powerful leader to oppress the common people, like Joseph Stalin in Communist Russia.

The central theme of Animal Farm is that evil government prevails while good is oppressed as long as the majority of the citizens are kept ignorant. After Old Major's speech of unity, the animals set out to form a Socialist utopia. Sadly, the pigs that gain control become corrupt by their newfound power, and they begin to act like the humans who were kicked off the farm in the first place. The oppression of the animals i


t to the glue factory, instead of being allowed to retire. The ignorance of the common animals allows them to be persuaded by Squealer to believe that Boxer is in the hospital. Squealer's propaganda keeps the animals from protesting Napoleon's criminal actions. The vile pigs' control reinforces the theme of evil oppressing good.

s a result of the common animals' ignorance; the animals cannot read or write while the pigs can do both. Obviously enough, this leads to an evil manipulation of language. The Seven Commandments eventually turn into "ALL ANIMALS ARE CREATED EQUAL, BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS" (133). The manipulation of the word "equal" leads to further oppression of the common animals by the pigs in control. Another example of the pigs' wickedness can be seen by the betrayal of Boxer, Napoleon's most loyal worker. When Boxer is too old to work he is sen!
