Summary of a Professional Journal Article

Today's teenagers differ from the teenagers of the past in that society has changed dramatically. In Victor C. Strasburger's journal article "Sex, Drugs, Rock 'N' Roll Revisited", originally in Clinical Pediatrics, Nov. 2000, Vol. 39 Issue 11, p.657, his overviews are on today's issues that teenager's face in the United States. He discusses teenage violence, the abuse of alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking, and the topic of sexual activity and sex education and the concern of all of these to the nation. Is today's generation of teenagers more into what of the past generations of teenagers did and now know is wrong, but not while they were doing it? Or is it the way that society has changed and the way they are adapting to its changes?

Today compared to the past is a totally different. There has been changes in everything we do, in what we wear, how we think and act, what is viewable on TV and heard on the radio, what we say, and the technological advances that we have discovered. Strasburger said, "Yes, juvenile violence has actually decreased in the late 1990s,(n1) but now we have a very new and real phenomeno

In this article there are many points that I agree with. Why, if societies knows so much about how to prevent all that is wrong with teenagers today, then why not put a stop to the violence, the drugs and alcohol, and the unprotected sex? If TV and movies are creating mass confusion on what is reality and what is not then why not put an end to all of these violent, sex oriented, drug related stories that are viewable to a all ages, no matter what age restrictions a set on them? Why are there cartoons on TV that have grade school children swearing, with cartoon characters acting out violence, kids killing kids in the news and on the radio, and sex on every channel, no matter what type of show or movie is on? I'll tell you why, it sells.

The United States has gotten so caught up on the fact that money is more important that they overlook the welfare of today's youth, as well as the older generations to make out in the dollar department. Sad but true, Strasburger also said, "We would ask the President why there are no anti-alcohol ads and so very few anti-smoking ads on TV, why so many Hollywood stars smoke and drink on screen,(n3) and why Congress took $30 million in payoffs last year to avoid having to
