Working with a mandated client can be very trying for both the worker and the client. Firstly, the client is obligated to attend these sessions and does not really want to be there. This makes the workers job even harder to reach out and help a client who is being forced to receive help. Many problems arise as a result of this. It is the worker's job to properly give the client informed consent, but this is difficult to do with mandated clients and often, professional values are challenged and ethical concerns emerge. The main job of the worker while working with a mandated client is to ensure that the client is given informed consent, the knowledge that the worker wishes to intervene in the life of the client and the consent to do so (also includes telling clients about treatment alternatives). Along with this consent goes the long upstanding value of self-determination, the belief that the client can make their own decisions about their life. How can the worker believe in the self-determination of the client however, if they know that it was the client's self-determination and bad choices that got them into the situation they are in now? This value will be challenged because the worker may start to judge the client ba

This in itself is an ethical issue and a client must understand the limits of confidentiality between him/herself and the worker and the risk that the worker's assessment may not be in the client's best interest. Some risks involved are losing your children or being found guilty in a court of law. Many of these risks and benefits of assessment cannot be anticipated in advance. During this assessment process, a therapeutic alliance between the worker and client is formed. The client learns to depend on the worker, is honest, and discloses information. In return, the client trusts and expects the worker to give an assessment that is in the client's best interest. This however may not happen. When working with a mandated client, the worker not only has to work in the best interest of the client but for the greater good, in the best interests of other people. If something of importance is disclosed by the client, the worker may first, need to address the needs, interest, and safety (especially if the client is a threat to the worker or others) of others and not that of the client. Some workers find it hard and sometimes unethical to use the client's own words against them, for the benefit of others. A mandated client is often required to see a worker for a limited number of sessions. In the beginning, the worker and client feel may feel pressured to get the most out of their time or the client may feel completely opposite and think that the t
