The changing family

A detailed Summary of The changing family

I have just read an article called "THE WAY WE REALLY ARE: Coming to Terms with America's Changing Families," by author, Stephanie Coontz. Coontz takes the reader from misconceptions of the Golden Age and it's families to the revival of women as the family co provider. I really enjoyed reading the article and agree on many points, like; there really was no Golden Age, and Census Bureau refinements. I disagree on a couple points however, the media being vulnerable and manipulated, and the working mother.

I agree with Coontz when she says there really wasn't a golden age. I think the way we talk, dress and what we drive now is different, but according to my grandpa, who was born in 1915, said, "There were still murders, rapes, kids taking drugs, smoking, violence in schools etc..." My grandpa went on to say that the media wasn't as prevalent back then. "Violence wasn't seen or heard on the news. You could hardly say darn in public." THE VULNERABLE AND MANIPULATED MEDIA

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hear quite a few people, and am myself guilty of, wanting to go back in time to the 1950's where life was simple and where things were easy. Where there were not all these murders and crimes being committed. Where there wasn't all the gang activity and drug use prevalent today. I believe that if people opened there eyes, they would see that after Adam and Eve committed that first sin and left the Garden of Eden, every man and woman born thereafter was born with a sinful nature. Some have a better handle on that nature then others. Crime, drugs, murder, and divorce have been going on since the beginning of time. In the book of Genesis, Cane killed his brother able in a jealous rage and went down in history as being the first murderer. The family has slowly and steadily changed and evolved into what we see today. Record divorces, drugs on the upswing, and more and more two-income families that are strangers to one another. I think we should bring back family values. It starts !
