Life itself is a journey full of relationships and events that lead to wisdom and understanding. Without these life-teaching relationships and events one may never accomplish growth or maturity. It would lead to an empty shell of a person, never truly feeling passion, love, or peace. John Marsden's novel Tomorrow, When the War Began, is an enlightening novel that demonstrates a group of adolescents who incur life-teaching experiences that allow them to grow and become mature, responsible adults. These experiences are unlike that of regular adolescents, and consequently lead to the early growth and maturity of the characters in the novel.

Throughout the novel, Ellie, who was the narrator of the story, asked herself many questions in relation to the invaders. In the beginning of the novel, there were simple "I wonder if..." questions. As the novel progressed however, it became more apparent that Ellie was concerned about things that were much more trivial than in the beginning. She began to wonder things like: "Had I killed because I valued my life above that of the others?", and "At what point did I condemn myself to Hell, if I hadn't already done so?". These questions were a great deal more involved than the previous questions in the beginning. Ellie had become to question her morals and her actions, wondering what the consequences could be and how they were going to affect her.

Tomorrow, When the War Began, truly is an enlightening book for the adolescents of the world today. It showed the seven main protagonists in their most vulnerable state
