John Marsden's novel Tomorrow, When the War Began, is an enlightening novel that demonstrates a group of adolescents who incur life-teaching experiences that allow them to grow and become mature, responsible adults. These experiences are unlike that of regular adolescents, and consequently lead to the early growth and maturity of the characters in the novel.

It showed the seven main protagonists in their most vulnerable state, become much more mature and responsible, as well as become their own highly developed individual character. It is in fact, a story about growing up and discovering ones' own self. Just as the caterpillar starts out innocent black and white, and goes through several stages to emerge colourful as well as a more complete and experienced individual, so to did the characters in this novel. They became a person who has been through life-teaching experiences. The seven adolescents went through, and overcame many traumas, to become the mature adults that they were in the end of the novel.
