Coming to the United States
Propose: To show my family that I have achieved what I came to the U.S. for: better education and become a better person.In August of 1994, I rode for 24 hours by plane to visit my two older brothers, Emad and Fuad, who were living in Little Rock, Arkansas. It was my first time to travel by myself, so it wasn't an easy trip. And I was 18 years old who knew very little English. The 25-day visit was the most beautiful experience I had ever had at that time. Accompanied by my brothers, I went to Florida, Arkansas, and Minnesota. Every thing I saw or did was amazing and interesting. Some of these things are: Disney Land, Universal Studio, Mall of America, the legendary American Corn Belt, the urban areas, the interstate highway system, and many other fascinating things. But the things that I enjoyed the most were the freedom and the lifestyle that my brothers flourished on. After my parent's agreement, I decided to come back to the U.S to complete my college degree. Growing up in middle class family, I had almost everything I needed. I have never needed to work, cook, nor clean up after myself! It was such an easy and simple life. Having friends that lived like me, I thought that is how everyone lives. I innocently thought that people are nice in nature, and the world is peaceful. I wasn't completely right. The six years I have spent in the U.S has showed me the real life. It has helped me learn and realize things that I have never known before. For instant, Cooking was a necessity in order for me to eat my traditional food. However, it became, like the rest of the house keeping tasks, a habit I enjoy. Also, I have met people with whom I shared language and cultural barriers. Not only I learned to overcome the differences, but also made new friendships, which influenced positively my social life.
