Phildelphia(the movie)

This quote is from the end of the credits of the film Philadelphia and

basically sums up the shocking reality of the problems in our culture. AIDS - acquired immunodeficiency syndrome -- was first reported in the United States in 1981 and has since become a major worldwide epidemic. AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV progressively kills and damages cells in the body's immune system. Because of the constant destruction of cells, the body's ability to fight infections and certain cancers decreases tremendously. People diagnosed with AIDS may also contract life-threatening diseases called

opportunistic infections, which are caused by microbes (such as viruses or bacteria). These infections would not normally make a healthy person sick, but a person with AIDS has such a low immune system, that they are more prone to any type of infection. More than 700,000 cases of AIDS have been reported in the United States since 1981, and as many as 900,000 Americans may be infected with HIV. "The epidemic is growing most rapidly among minority populations and is a leading killer of African A

In 1993, the year this movie was made was an appropriate time because it was about the same time people begin to learn about the AIDS virus. Because of the recent spread of HIV and the stereotypes made up about the people with the virus, this movie was made not only to educate people, but also to show the reality of what is happening in our society. In the eighties and nineties AIDS was a huge deal. Philadelphia hit a lot of sore spots. I remember watching this in 1993 when it came out in the theaters. I remember people leaving during the courtroom scenes near the end, when Andrew Beckett takes off his shirt to show the numerous lesions on his torso. They were disgusted at the reality of how a person was affected by AIDS. When dealing with AIDS or any other disease or physical harm, because a person has physical atrophy and lesions, or any other sort of physical difference does that make them any less of the person they used to be? People who were dying from this virus were being mocked and ridiculed having the "gay plague" or anything else they used to call it. In this movie it showed exactly how this happens and how America and everywhere else people are not living to the fullest because they are scared of what may come of their happiness.

In my opinion, this movie is very similar to the film American Beauty, from 1999. The ideas from this movie shocked a lot of people, because the ideas that were brought forth to the screen, were not necessarily acceptable at the time. I think that this is what made both of these great movies. They both went against what was accepted dur
