Why should Athletes Not Pay an Activity Fee

WHY STUDENT ATHLETES SHOULD NOT PAY OR SHOULD HAVE AN ACTVTY FEE DURING THEIR SEASON?

Student athletes have always been a big part of college life and at Kentucky State University it has not proven differently. As a student at Kentucky State University you have to pay an activity fee. That fee covers athlete games, yearbook, and other fee activities on campus. This is a good thing, but it hurts the student athletes who have to pay to play the sport that they play.

Athletes should not be charged for an activity fee when they are in season because they rarely are able to go to the activities. Athletes feel that they should not pay for activities that they do not get to attend due to the stipulations that are included with their sport.

The purpose of this report is to analyze the results of a survey that questioned student athletes about their feelings on paying an activity fee, interviews with different university officials, interviews with varies coaches on staff, and costs of different universities. The report will evaluate the lack of involvement an athlete has in activities during his/her season and will attempt to identify reasons why the waiver would benefit athletes. In add

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE ACTIVITY FEE

Because these measures may be unpopular with the non student athletes, the university should make a concerted effort to explain the importance of the waivers for athletes. The Athlete Director should be given the responsibility fro developing a plan to communicate the need for student athletes.

Kentucky State University is currently making an estimate of $27,500 or higher just off of the activity fee. Although the much of the activity fee student athletes get to enjoy, the other part they don't because they don't because they are participating in the sport.

Now, know that athletes only attended 3. 7 events on campus during their season. It can be believed that not a lot of athletes did not go to hear them speak. That is why the activity needs to be waived.

The university would not lose much money, if it waived the activity fee for student athletes. It would lose around $20-30,000, but could make it back on other activities on campus such as basketball and football games.

ACTIVITY FEES AFFECT ATHLETES OVERALL FINANCIAL STATUS

Figure 1 illustrates the averages of how many events student athletes attend during their season. The sports are football, basketball, volleyball, softball, track & field, and baseball.
