One prevalent battle these characters are fighting is that between the savage, and civilized nature. These characters choose to either become the savage or choose to follow the path of civilized nature.
One character who truly exemplifies this battle quite literally is Leper. In the beginning Leper is so well mannered and polite. Then he enlists in the army coming back harsh and bitter. When Gene comes to seem him he sees a tremendous change in him. He is so short tempered not like the Leper he once knew he begins to think "...Leper was deranged, he was not of sound mind..." This book deals with many different natures such as the savage nature with Leper and Brinker and their actions, then it deals with the more civilized nature with Finny's different things to try and escape reality, but then it also deals with a character who knows the benefits of both sides of the natures and doesn't want to choose out of either one of them. Gene comes to feel that he is much happier when he is with Finny and not having to deal with the war. But Finny brings out Genes competitive nature and when he does this Gene doesn't feel so well anymore because he realizes that he is clumsy. Brinker and Leper are there to remove Gene from this fantasy world that Finny has got him involved him and all this does to Gene is make him afraid and brings out the worst in him. Genes attitude is good because he is not directed to one side and closed minded to the other, it is good to know of both sides and deal with them.
