mind body dualism in the bible
Dualism is defined as the state of being composed of two parts. It often refers to the idea that man has two natures: physical (body) and spiritual (soul). Dualism considers the physical to be evil and only the spirit or soul to be good. We will take a look at how different passages from the Bible show the soul and body separation. It is present in many aspects including sexually, politically, and socially. The message that is most occurring is that the soul is the most important part of a human. It is also evident that Christians and the writers of the Bible held that the soul is a separate spirit that is only contained in the body. The first reference made to the body and soul is made in the very beginning of the Bible. In the Hebrew Bible, the word "soul" stands for the self. It means "breath of life." In the second story of creation in Genesis it says, "the Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being" (2.7-8). There is a play on words here. In Hebrew adam means man and adama means ground. When put together they translate into soul. In the first creation story it says, "God created man in His image; in the divine image He crea
There are social and political connections visible with soul/body dualism as well. When speaking of the soul and body in this context, they are again distinctly separated. God says, "If your descendants so conduct themselves so they remain faithful to me with their whole heart and with their whole soul you shall always have someone of your line on the throne of Israel" (1Kings 2.4). He talks of heart and soul as if they are two different pieces of a body. When relating the body/soul dualism to sexuality we need to return to the creation stories. As pointed out earlier, we know both Adam and Eve were created in the image and likeness of God, but there is no account of God breathing His life (soul) into Eve when he made her. "And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man" (Gen.2.22). Is it then to be believed (as it was for some time) that women, to this day do not possess souls? I believe that because Eve was created from Adam (who had received the breath of life) she too received some of his breath. If she is bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh, why not soul of his soul. When asked about divorce, Jesus also refers back to the chapter in Genesis where it says that a man and woman become one body in marriage. He then concludes, "What God has joined together, let no one separate" (Matt. 19. 6-7). Paul also gives advice to the virgins and widows. "An unmarried woman or virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord so that she may be holy in both body and spirit. A married woman, on the other hand, is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please her husband" (1Cor. 7.34). He tells them this for their own benefit. He wants them to restrain themselves and adhere to the Lord without distraction. We must not neglect God by focusing too much on our marriage partner. It seems virgins are regarded as more holy because all of their focus is on the Lord. So the conclusion about sexuality dealing with dualism is this. Take care of your body. It is pointed out that the body is the Temple of God's spirit and our soul. By committing ! Our souls and our bodies were created to conform to the character of God. Yes, God's character is present in our spirit, but it is also evident in that which holds our soul; our bodies. The Bible clearly teaches that God created both our soul through his breath of life and our bodies through the earth. They have both been affected
