Battle of the Sexes: who is in the lead
While I was driving in the car a few months ago, my mother and I were talking about the various stereotypes of students, which lead into a discussion of gender inequity. Who is better-males or females? That is something that many people are still arguing throughout the world today. My mother stated that "various studies have shown that men are, and always have been, better than women." Is this really true? My hypothesis is that this is incorrect and that women are at least equal with men in education. This statement irritated me and I found myself wanting to disprove the belief that men are superior to women in education because I find this fact disturbing for a country that promotes equality in both males in females. The issue of gender inequity is one that has been publicly reverberating throughout society for decades-the problem of gender inequity in education being one of the more pressing issues of today. This paper will examine the true statistics of gender ineq!uity and hopefully disprove what little knowledge I have of this subject matter. It will also tackle what is being done to remedy the situation. In a slow attempt at starting this research for this paper, I quickly turned to the Internet to find any and
With women striving to overcome a stereotype place upon them in society, I am glad that research has shown that we are making progress. Various indicators have been used here to examine the extent to which females and males have access to similar educational outcomes. By most of these measures, females are doing at least as well as males. Although part of the statement my mother told me was true, I was relieved to find out that my hypothesis was also true in many aspects. The gap in gender is coming to a close and equality is in the near future. ve more math and science, they too will follow in the footsteps of their peers and surrounding idols. As for why more women are not in more mathematical or science-based jobs, the only suggestion she could offer was on the same lines as the boys. Girls see older men in certain jobs and it is embedded in their minds that men are supposed to do one job and women, another. In most aspects of this, I agree completely. Then, in 1996, the achievement scores of males slightly exceeded those of females at both ages because of increases in performance for males. In other words, higher mathematics performance among younger males is a recent phenomenon. I also found that this is also the case in other countries. Gender differences in mathematics and science proficiency have also been observed. In 1995, in general, boys and girls performed similarly in math and science around the fourth grade in about half of the countries, with differences emerging more systematically among older students. As time goes on though, differences in academic performance become more defined. According to the NCES, by the final year of secondary school, males performed better than females in both math and science in most of the assessed countries, with the exception of math in the US. I was curious as to why I had been previously misinformed and found it interesting to research some of the possible reasons as to girls could be ahead of boys in education, and I was surprised to find out a few basic facts about education. According to the survey, girls seem to have fewer problems with school in the early grades than do boys. Girls are also less likely to have parents contacted by schools about behavioral problems. I find this extremely important because it is a student's cooperation in learning that enables a teacher to truly affect his or her student. These behavioral problems also lead to such actions as repeating grades, which harms their educational progress immensely. According to this survey, in 1995, girls, ages five to twelve, are less likely to have repeated a grade since starting school. In 1972, the gap between males and females in the drop out rate was very close, with fourteen percent of males and fifteen percent of females dropping out.! pectations on its females that I feel females are the way they are today. When I was growing up, the typical girl wanted to be a "teacher" or a "hairdresser." Throughout life, society unconsciously implements the idea that a woman's role in life is to fall in love, get married and have children. Men are supposedly the "breadwinners" of society. It is because of this that I feel society has implanted in women that men are supposed to do bette
