On December 7th, 1941 at 8:00 a.m. a bomb was dropped on Pearl Harbor by Japan. There had been no official declaration of war. The U.S.S Arizona (BB39 Battleship) was struck by a converted armor penetrating naval shell. This explosion caused the U.S.S Arizona to sink to the harbor bottom in just a few minutes. The explosion and sinking resulted in the death of over 1,100 crew members (mt. Diablo/pearlharbor). This brutality caused the U.S to respond in a very hostile and brutal manner.
Admiral Isoroko Yamamoto had conceived the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. It was a force of 353 Japanese aircraft that was lead by Commander Mitsuo Fuchida. After the attack on Pearl Harbor people from all over began to flood recruiting stations. People from all over the U.S wanted to fight back. As for the U.S.S. Arizona it is now the final resting place for many of the ships 1,100 crewmembers whom lost their lives on December 7th, 1941. The 184 foot long memorial structure spanning the mid-portion of the sunken battleship consists of three main sections: the entry and assembly rooms; a central area designed for general observation and ceremonies, and last, but not least the shrine room where the names of those killed on the Arizona are engraved on the marble wall. The U.S.S Arizona was brought about by the desire to establish some sort of memorial at Pearl Harbor to honor those who died in the attack. Suggestions of the memorial began in 1943, but it wasn't until 1949, when the territory of Hawaii established the Pacific War Memorial commission, that the first real steps were taken to actually bring it about (nps.gov/usar/).
Many who survived were later killed by radiation, or were severely burned and/or crippled. To this day many Japanese still endur
