Samuel Gompers was born on January 27, 1850 in London. At the age of 10 despite attending The Jews' Free School as a good student, Samuel left to apprentice a shoe maker. Shortly there after he changed his trade to become a cigar maker in the steps of his father. In 1864 he and his family moved to New York were he and his father continued their trade.
In 1864 Samuel became a member of the Cigar Makers Union. Three years later he was married and one more after that a father. In 1874he was elected president of the local 144, which he also helped
