savage labor
Kaya Johnson Boyd 1 "By a conservative estimate, there are 27 million people working under various forms of slavery in the world today, and the number is growing" (Anonymous pg.14). This is the size of a small country. There are many reasons why this slavery has come about. Racism is one of them. Ever since people have come across somebody of another skin color or background, there has been racism. Racism is instilled in our minds and comes out as hatred. Society shows this hate by treating different cultures and backgrounds than their own like lower class citizens or inferior. You can go as far to say that some people are treated as scum or "savages". Savages by definition are uncivilized and not domesticated. The fact that we are all human beings is forgotten and much of this hatred is passed on from generation to generation without even the root of this prejudice being known. Most of our thoughts about other people stem from our parents and immediate family. The ideas that our paren! ts have are transferred to us by actions as well as language. The media plays a huge role also. Since the time that television had been invented, t
Takaki looks at the history of multicultural America. Since the time the Puritans came to America and immigration started, this country has become a land of many peoples and cultures. A huge example of the third world labor crisis that has been in the media is the Kathie Lee Gifford story. She has clothes made for the huge corporation Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart keeps their low prices that everyone loves by using cheap labor in these poor countries. Kathie Lee was exposed by the media in which she knew about some of the horrible working conditions in some of her sweatshops, but did nothing about it. She also knew about child labor and other aspects, which she kept secret. She is not to be picked out of society and attacked though, because she is a product of the racism that has come about in America. difference even if we all look the same inside. There are dumb whites just as well as there are dumb blacks, dumb Indians, etc. If you must hate, then hate everyone equally. Society must accept that people all have different backgrounds or religions. Once we accept this fact, we can look to the future filled with the majority of non-white people. "One third of all working age women in Brazil are sterilized" (Zwick). This occurs because corporations in America need the women to work rather then to bear children. This is an incredible statistic and also not well known. There is so much going on in third- world countries that Americans are never told about. The media is paid off by huge corporations as to not tell the public. It is really hard to be an informed citizen when there is lots of hidden information out there. Women workers in Brazil are also given birth control. The men are not left out either. They are given condoms. We are not giving these items out to help the Brazilians. We are doing it for our own benefit and for us as a country to have cheap labor and keep costs down. "If a worker becomes pregnant, she is through" (Zwick). too heavy of items or a woman could be working to buy her baby formula. These are ideas to consider when purchasing goods and services. We think of these people as "Disposable People" (Anonymous pg. 14). It is much like when we kill animals for food. We imagine that they are lower class than us, that they don't deserve a healthy life. We think that they are stupid and would not know the difference. Americans think that life in third world countries is so awful that the little wages will suffice. But that is false. The work in these sweatshops and factories is much more grueling. Corporations make false pr
